Brook Street Retaining Walls and Catch Fence

Engaged through direct procurement in late 2023, this urgent project was undertaken to complete critical works before the onset of winter. A significant slip was perched on a steep 30-degree slope above residential properties, posing a real threat to the homes below.
The team mobilized quickly to clear vegetation and remove over 500m³ of unstable material. This was followed by the application of Enkamat and hydromulch for erosion control. Access to the site was very challenging, as all materials had to be loaded onto a small off-road dumper and dropped at a small stockpile site at the base of the track. From there, materials were reloaded onto road trucks and taken to a clean fill dumpsite. A GeoBrugg landslide protection fence was installed to provide long-term security and peace of mind to the homeowners below.
Working above private residential houses presented considerable risks, particularly during augering and excavation activities. However, the project was executed with exceptional attention to safety and environmental management.
This was a rewarding project to be a part of, with collaboration among the homeowners, Nelson City Council, and the design team ensuring resilience for the future.
