Dorothy Annie Way Slip Repairs

The slip remediation project on Dorothy Annie Way and the Cleveland Terrace area involved significant geotechnical and environmental risks due to the steep terrain and its proximity to residential properties.
A large volume of debris from a slump had compromised the slope above a developed area, posing a direct threat to property and public infrastructure. Recognising this, the Nelson City Council initiated the project with a tightly controlled scope, focusing on risk mitigation, safety, and environmental protection.
The stabilisation of the slope began with the creation of benches to provide access for excavators. The team carefully trimmed and removed debris before applying Enkamat erosion control matting and hydromulch. A custom timber debris catch fence was installed, embedded into the rock, to serve as a passive barrier system.
Throughout the construction process, stringent hold points were implemented for engineering inspections. Excavations were closely monitored, and the installation of poles followed precise embedment and concrete curing procedures to ensure the structural integrity of the fence.
Despite the challenges of working on a steep slope with limited access, the project team managed to provide continuous access for residents by staging the work. Environmental controls, including sediment fencing and clean drainage outlets, were established from day one. Ultimately, the project was completed without any incidents, with no environmental breaches, no reported safety issues, and a high-quality finish.
