Milton St Power Upgrade

Donaldson Civil was the civil contractor on this project working for Power Services.
The brief was to install new 11kV cables between two locations in The Wood area of Nelson, the cable would use a variety of ducts, new and old.
This complimented our team’s skill set, as it involved various methods of duct installation before pulling through the new cables.

First of all, existing ducts were found and checked to ensure see if they were suitable for new cables.
Unfortunately, a lot were unable to be used and therefore our scope to install new duct needed to extend.

New duct install consisted of Horizontal Directional Drilling and Open Trenching. The chosen method was dependent on location, service crossings and reinstatement required.
Once ducts were installed and joined to the existing network, ropes were blown through using high pressure air, before pulling the new cables through in sections using our cable winch.

Our scope covered all aspects of civil works, this also included Traffic Management.
As this job was on busy residential streets, we decided to subcontract the TM work.
Our site staff and the Downer STMS had a great working relationship through the project with good communication and a pragmatic approach to getting the job complete, yet enabling residents and public access through the site.

All Cables are now live and the Power reticulation in this area is more resilient as a result of this project.
