Panorama Drive Retaining Walls

Client: Nelson City Council
Location: Panorama Drive, Kakenga Road
This project involved remediation of land that had slipped due to the significant rain events which battered the Nelson Region in December 2011. With steep slopes and difficult access, this job was challenging from the beginning. Arrangements were made with landowners for access and benches were cut to ensure the safety of machines and personnel while drilling took place on steep slopes.

Holes needed to be drilled five metres through many soil types and into port hills gravel, with large boulders making drilling extremely challenging on numerous occassions. A timber retaining wall and significant rock benching were built at one site and a palisade concrete structure at another.

This project provided a steep learning curve for some of those involved but the guidance and ingenuity of others meant the job ran smoothly from start to finish. The client was so impressed with the results that they immediately awarded Donaldson Civil contracts for work on two other large sites.
