Stafford Drive Slip Clearing and Rock Placement

Client: Tasman District Council
Location: Stafford Drive

After a large rain event that battered the Tasman District in August 2023 Stafford Drive become impassable for traffic with some 8000m3 of material slipped across the road.

The Tasman Alliance who manages the Tasman District Council roading network was tasked with clearing the Slip and associated Drainage Channels and building a new Rock Sea wall to replace a badly damaged section.

Donaldson Civil subcontracted to the Alliance and the project started by tidying driftwood and re-stacking rock on the 120m section of Sea wall that had been damaged. While this was being done approximately 660t of large diameter rock was brought in from Wakefield. Our 23T Excavator used a rock grab bucket to place the rock and form the wall back to its original specifications.

A damaged culvert and headwall were replaced during the operation. After this was complete, the team moved to assisting with the removal of spoil and cleanup of the pavement and channels on Stafford Drive that was covered in debris. Our Komatsu D51 Dozer was deployed to a fill site that slip material was being carted to which assisted the operation at the back end.
