Werneth Ridge Retaining Walls

Client: Private Development
Location: Werneth Ridge, Atawhai
In the aftermath of the 2022 flood event, a significant landslide occurred between properties at 9 and 11 Werneth Ridge, Atawhai. Donaldson Civil was engaged to remediate the damage, completing work on both properties simultaneously to ensure efficiency and consistency.

The project involved constructing three completely new retaining walls and remediating two existing ones. Over 50 pole holes were augered to depths of 1.3m to 3.1m for walls with retained heights up to 2.6m. Poles ranging from 180mm to 350mm in diameter and up to 6m long were installed, alongside more than 500m of half rounds for wall reinforcement, complete with drainage pipe and wrapped metal backfill.

Concrete was pumped into pole holes, and dish channels were expertly hand-formed above and below the walls. The steep, high-risk site posed unique challenges. To ensure safety, our team developed a strategy that included cutting flat benches for the excavator, eliminating the need to turn and reducing the machine’s center of gravity.

The narrow driveway access required collaboration with residents to ensure safety, resulting in planned driveway closures during the physical works. Bags of topsoil were craned into site to minimize manual labor upon completion of the walls.

Despite the logistical challenges, the project was completed efficiently and to the satisfaction of all involved.
